Theaters
National Theaters
Bavarian National Opera The Bavarian National Opera takes up esthetic challenges, i.e., not only the brilliance of Mozart, Verdi and Wagner are cultivated with first-class soloists. The opera achieved new dimensions with exciting new performances of baroque operas of Handel and Monteverdi in the 90s. Kent Nagano – one of the most outstanding conductors for opera and orchestra – has been cultural director since September 2006.
Bavarian National Ballet You can experience the Bavarian National Ballet with classics such as Swan Lake and Romeo and Juliet with style either in its usual place of performance, the National Theater, or in the Prince Regent Theater.
Bavarian National Theater The main venue of the Bavarian National Theater is the Residenz Theater. Other performances are held in the large theaters in the Haus der Kunst and in Marstall. (Website available in German only)
National Theater at Gärtnerplatz In addition to opera, ballet, musicals and operettas, the National Theater provides the series “Jazz in Gärtnerplatz”. (Website available in German only)
Theaters
German Theater The German Theater is unique among German theaters. After the Opera, it is the second largest theater in Munich with its 1,600 seats and approx. 300 performances annually, and it is the largest and most famous theater for guest performances with a full stage in Germany. German Theater means international show business on the highest level, lavishly designed top shows, enthralling stories and pulsating live music.
INTERIM Theater The INTERIM Theater, located in the Laim city district, is a meeting place for variety shows, theater, music, cabaret and citizens’ events. (Website available in German only)
Comedy in Bayerischer Hof Known German and international actors perform top-rate light comedy. The repertoire includes dramatic scenes and humorous moments for great entertainment. The theater has room for 560 guests and belongs to one of the leading luxury hotels in downtown Munich. (Website available in German only)
Marionette Studio Kleines Spiel Lively puppet and marionette shows, and not just for kids. The small Marionette Studio gives performances of pieces by Bertolt Brecht, Ben Jonson and Tankred Dorst and was awarded the Schwabing Art Prize in 2004. The unique feature: all puppeteers, puppet-makers and speakers are volunteers and consequently all shows are free. (Website available in German only)
Munich Studio Theater This history of the Munich Studio Theater shines with a number of known, big names such as Berthold Brecht, Axel von Ambesser and Franz Xaver Kroetz, staging of whose plays have made the theater one of the best in Germany till today. The repertory includes everything today from classical to modern pieces. (Website available in German only)
Munich Lustspielhaus In addition to known comedy stars such as Michael Mittermeier, Willy Astor and Ingo Appelt, there are also concerts with a great variety of pop, jazz, world music and especially “Alps rock music” at regular intervals. (Website available in German only)
Munich Volkstheater Regardless of whether exotic mixes from turntables, jazz compositions on the saxophone or cabaret-type songs, the Munich Volkstheater always surprises its guests. Totally in the tradition of the successful Monday club, the theater also provides the city of Munich with a series of completely new club evenings. Apparently commonplace objects of more or less prominent people become rarities in the “Monday auction”. And it’s all for a good cause. (Website available in German only)
New Munich Theater The New Munich Theater is a platform for new ideas from and for Munich’s art scene – both nationally and internationally. It provides space for dance, theater, performances, new music, video art and fine arts. The area of e-media and electronics play a pivotal role. (Website available in German only)
Prince Regent Theater – Bavarian Theater Academy As the performance site for the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding – the largest educational institute for theater professions in Germany – and for the Bavarian National Opera at Gärtnerplatz, the Prince Regent Theater provides a varied and wide-ranged program from readings to concerts and operas. (Website available in German only)
Schauburg Children and young people’s theater from Munich at Elisabethplatz. (Website available in German only)
Theater from the Carryall The “carryall” is really packed full: plays for men and women, detective stories and readings for children. (Website available in German only)
Theater Heppel & Ettlich The off-theater has dared to attempt reconciling the tried-and-tested with the new since 1976. While a few artists have performed in Heppel & Ettlich for years, talented people of the next generation have been promoted consistently too. Regardless of whether music cabaret, entertaining a cappella or cool jazz rhythms, a evening in Heppel & Ettlich is always something very special both with respect to the music and the ambience. (Website available in German only)
Orchestras
Munich Philharmonic The Munich Philharmonic, currently conducted by Christian Tielemann as General Music Director, is one of the most well known and successful German orchestras. The Philharmonic provides its audience with very special listening enjoyment from chamber and orchestra concerts to young and children’s chamber concerts and all the way to special performances and final rehearsals open to the public.
Munich Chamber Orchestra You can enjoy contemporary to classical works of music art in the Chamber Orchestra, always under the motto of “classically different”. The Munich Chamber Orchestra received a prize from the German Music Publishers Association for the “Best Concert Program”. (Website available in German only)
